World Environment Day – Why Timber is the Greenest Choice for Homes
On World Environment Day, we thought we would take the opportunity to put one of the most eco-friendly materials in construction under the spotlight – timber.
As the global fight to tackle climate change continues, reducing our carbon footprint and protecting natural resources is even more important. Compared to materials like plastic, concrete and steel, timber is the ultimate green choice when sourced responsibly.
Let’s look at it in more detail:
1. Lower Carbon Footprint
Timber is the only major building material that naturally captures and stores carbon. Trees absorb CO₂ from the atmosphere during growth, and then when it’s used in construction, that carbon stays locked away for decades, known as a carbon sink.
If you compare that to:
- uPVC, which is produced from fossil fuels and releases significant emissions during production. The manufacturing of uPVC window frames can emit up to 6 kg of CO₂ per kg of material.
- Aluminium, which is extremely energy-intensive to produce from, generating around 9 to 12 tonnes of CO₂ for every tonne manufactured, even when recycled.
2. Renewable Sources
Timber is a renewable resource, especially when sourced from responsibly managed forests. At Brookeswood, we only use sustainably sourced timber from certified suppliers.
Compare that to:
- Plastics, which are petroleum-based, take centuries to break down.
- Metals, though they can be recycled, still need energy-intensive processes to produce and repurpose.
3. Energy Efficiency
Timber is a natural insulator, helping regulate indoor temperatures and reducing the need for excessive heating or cooling. That means lower energy bills and cuts energy consumption.
Aluminium, which is non-thermally broken, transfers the cold and heat too easily, meaning more energy is needed to stay warm or stay cool.
The thermal performance of uPVC declines as the material ages, leading to reduced energy efficiency over the product’s lifespan.
4. Timber in Sustainable Architecture: More Than Just Green
While timber is more sustainable, it also provides lots of design and performance benefits:
- Great Aesthetics: Timber adds character, charm, and timeless beauty to your home
- Durability: When properly manufactured and serviced, timber can last generations, especially when you use our Ensure Service.
- Flexibility: From traditional joinery methods to modern builds, timber can be used in so many different architectural designs.
At Brookeswood, we combine traditional craftsmanship with modern techniques to produce beautiful bespoke timber doors, windows, and staircases that not only performs beautifully, but are made with the planet in mind.
5. Choosing Timber Means Choosing the Future
This World Environment Day, we encourage homeowners, architects, interior designers and developers to look at the bigger picture. By choosing timber instead of other materials, you are:
- Supporting renewable resource use,
- Reducing environmental impact,
- Contributing to carbon reduction.
